Global Action for Children Mourns the Passing of Congressman Tom Lantos
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 12, 2008
WASHINGTON -GAC is deeply saddened by the passing of House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Lantos (D-CA).
"Chairman Lantos was a champion of human rights throughout the world." said Jennifer Delaney, Executive Director of GAC. "We at Global Action were fortunate to work with his staff, and had many occasions to applaud his leadership on AIDS as a global issue. His efforts were crucial in ensuring funding for global AIDS, TB, and malaria programs that have saved the lives of millions of people, including orphans and vulnerable children."
GAC notes Chairman Lantos was responsible for ensuring that 10 percent of all HIV/AIDS funding from the United States was included in the reauthorization of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) now underway in the House of Representatives.
"Among Chairman Lantos’ legacies is the help this country will continue to provide so many millions of vulnerable children around the world," remarked Leila Nimatallah, GAC’s Policy Director. "We as a global community owe many thanks to this champion for children."
